Benefits of Dermal Fillers

How Facial Fillers Work

Juvéderm, one of the most popular filler brands, is made of a naturally occurring substance called Hyaluronic Acid (HA). This substance is found naturally in our bodies, but as we age, our production lessens, causing our skin to become loose or sag. Juvéderm and similar HA fillers are made of a clear HA gel that, when injected, keeps the skin firm, tight, plump, and youthful without surgical procedures. In addition, HA fillers also perfectly restore facial volume, improve symmetry, augment the lips and the cheeks, and contour the jawline. After your filler injections, you will notice fewer aging signs like wrinkles, lines, or sagging skin. In its place, you will have a plump, volumized, smooth, and rejuvenated look on your face.

Dermal fillers also have numerous other uses, including:

  • Cheeks: Dermal fillers can restore lost volume and enhance your facial contours to rejuvenate your appearance.
  • Lips: Fillers can plump thin lips, enhance symmetry, boost hydration, and smooth wrinkles.
  • Smile Lines (Nasolabial Folds): This treatment adds volume to soften these lines, making your complexion more youthful.
  • Puppet Lines (Marionette Lines): These lines extend from the corners of your mouth to your chin. Dermal fillers can smooth these creases.
  • Under The Eyes (Tear Throughs): When placed under the eyes, fillers can add volume to hollow areas, fade dark circles, and reduce wrinkles and fine lines.
  • Chin and Jawline: Dermal fillers can create a stronger profile by addressing sagging skin and enhancing your chin projection.
  • Temples: This treatment can fill in hollow areas and improve your facial balance.
  • Hands: Fillers can rejuvenate your hands by minimizing the appearance of prominent veins and smoothing signs of aging.

Dermal Fillers Before and After Photos*

The dermal filler before and after photos show genuine filler results from actual clients. As always, individual experiences vary.* However, each person shown in the before and afters achieves visible improvements to their facial features in terms of lost volume, asymmetry, loose or lax skin, and wrinkles.
*Results may vary

Results*

After treatment, you should see an immediate enhancement in volume, but the full results develop over time. It usually takes about 2-4 weeks for the dermal filler to settle in and for swelling to subside before you can see the final outcome.

As with any cosmetic procedure, individual results may vary.* Your outcome will depend on several factors, including the type of filler used, treatment area, the amount of filler injected, and even your metabolism. Generally, dermal filler results can last from 6 to 24 months. With proper aftercare, you can optimize the results of your treatment. Concerned about your results fading? You can come in for touch-ups, and your injector can let you know how often you need to come in to preserve your dermal filler results.

Aftercare

With good aftercare, you can recover smoothly from your injections, minimize risks, and optimize your outcome. Fortunately, with dermal fillers, the side effects are usually mild and easy to manage. It’s common to experience slight swelling, redness, and bruising at the injection sites, but these effects should begin to subside within a few days.

Your provider will give you a list of guidelines to follow, but here are some of our best aftercare tips:

  • Avoid Touching The Treated Areas: Touching the treated areas could cause the filler to migrate past the injection site and may affect your results.
  • Don’t Wear Makeup: Wait at least 12 hours before wearing makeup again to help minimize the risk of infection.
  • Reduce Swelling With Ice: You can minimize swelling by applying a cold compress or ice pack to your treated areas for 10-15 minutes at a time.
  • Stay Upright: Remaining upright at least 3-4 hours after treatment will help prevent the filler from moving to other areas.
  • Don’t Do Strenuous Activities: Intense physical activity can contribute to swelling and bruising, which may prolong your healing time.
  • Avoid Hot Environments: It’s best to avoid saunas and other hot settings for at least 24-48 hours after your treatment because sweating can make swelling and bruising worse.
  • Wear Sunscreen: If you do need to go outside, be sure to wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher to protect your skin as you heal.

Can Dermal Fillers Be Dissolved?

If you’ve never had dermal fillers before or want the option of making easy adjustments after treatment, dissolvable fillers may be a great choice for you. However, not all fillers are reversible. Hyaluronic acid-based fillers like Juvéderm and Restylane can be dissolved. However, fillers containing calcium hydroxylapatite (Radiesse) and poly-L-lactic acid (Sculptra) cannot be dissolved. If you’re interested in reversible fillers, be sure to let your esthetician know during your consultation.

How Can Fillers Be Dissolved?

Hyaluronic acid-based fillers can be reversed easily with a few injections. These injections contain hyaluronidase, an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid. After this treatment dissolves the filler, hyaluronic acid will become absorbed in your body.
Here’s what the process looks like:

  • Consultation: Your esthetician will listen to your goals and let you know if dissolving your filler is suitable for you.
  • Preparation: If dissolving your filler is the best course of action, your provider will gently clean the treatment areas. A numbing cream may also be applied to minimize discomfort.
  • Injections: Your esthetician will inject hyaluronidase into specific locations to break down your filler.

After your session, it’s normal to experience some minor redness and swelling, but these side effects should subside within a few days. Your filler will begin dissolving immediately, but it may take 2-5 days before it becomes fully dissolved. One treatment may be enough to reverse the effects, but your esthetician will guide you in through this process. After 2-4 weeks, you can consider having new filler injections if you want a touch-up.

Dermal Fillers Available at AVIVA Med Spa

Juvéderm

Juvéderm, made by Allergan, is one of the most well-known facial fillers available. This popular filler is made of Hyaluronic Acid, and it is known for its ability to define and contour plump lips, contour the jawline, restore lost volume around the mouth, enhance cheeks, and entirely rejuvenate your facial features.

Juvéderm can treat some of the most problematic areas, like around the mouth, under the eyes, the temples, cheeks, lips, and the jawline. Your esthetician can also reverse and adjust the results if you want to make touch-ups.

Restylane

Restylane is another popular Hyaluronic Acid facial filler. Its formula acts as the body’s naturally occurring hyaluronic acid, providing support and structure to facial features like the cheeks and lips. In addition, it is also very useful for reducing smile lines or frown lines around the mouth.

Restylane is known for being a very versatile filler. It comes available in a variety of formulas created to plump and contour the lips, cheeks, and chin. There are also formulas for treating marionette lines and even the hands. Since this filler is made from hyaluronic acid, it can be reversed if you want to touch-up your results.

Aviva Med Spa owner Ellen Neufeld prefers Restylane for its versatility and safety. It was the first FDA-approved filler almost 20 years ago and uses XpresHAn technology to ensure natural results, even in areas that move.

The FDA-approved Sculptra® aesthetic injection is clinically proven to gradually replenish the body’s natural collagen through a series of treatments. While it is most often used to restore facial volume lost with age, Sculptra® is also effective in lifting, tightening, and revitalizing loose, sagging skin in other areas of the body. If you’re interested in getting Sculptra, it’s important to note that this filler is not dissolvable. However, many of our clients love its ability to produce long-lasting results.

Dermal Fillers FAQs

How long do dermal fillers last?*
Dermal fillers typically last about 6 months, sometimes longer. The top-rated line of Juvéderm can last 6 to 18 months. The more hydrating facial fillers like the Juvéderm Ultra Plus and Juvéderm Ultra often last for about 12 months. The thicker the formula, the longer it lasts. Individual results will vary per person depending on your body and how fast your body metabolizes the filler.*
Are dermal filler injections painful?*
Most people report they tolerate dermal filler injections well. There are several ways to help improve your comfort during treatments if you have a low pain tolerance. Your comfort can be enhanced by proper injection technique and numbing creams.
In addition, if you are receiving Juvéderm fillers, the formulas with “XC” in the name contain lidocaine, which helps the filler experience be less painful.
Individual experiences will vary.*

How can I avoid unnatural results?

Do your research and choose your injector carefully. If they have an unnatural or overfilled appearance themselves, that could be a red flag. Take the time to read reviews, review before and after photos of their work, and schedule a consultation. This will give you the opportunity to ask questions and ensure you feel comfortable and confident in their expertise.

Which dermal fillers can be dissolved?

Only fillers containing hyaluronic acid can be dissolved. Juvéderm and Restylane are popular options to consider if you’re interested in reversible dermal fillers. At Aviva Med Spa, the only filler we offer that cannot be dissolved is Sculptra. If you’re interested in having a dissolvable filler, let your esthetician know during your consultation. This can ensure you have the option to reverse your results and help them recommend the best dermal filler for your goals.

How can dermal fillers be dissolved?

Hyaluronic acid-based fillers can be reversed with injections containing hyaluronidase. This enzyme quickly breaks down hyaluronic acid to dissolve your filler. It may take a few days to see the full results, but dissolvable fillers give you the option of making adjustments. A few weeks after your filler dissolves, you can choose to get new filler injections if you want a touch-up. Many of our clients love having this option, knowing the results aren’t permanent. If you haven’t had dermal fillers before, you might prefer Juvéderm or Restylane to Sculptra. Your esthetician can help you make the best choice.

How do Dermal Fillers Work?

A typical HA filler is soft and gel-like, which keeps skin hydrated and plump when injected. Particles are gradually absorbed by the body over a period of six to twelve months, stimulating your body’s natural collagen production processes.

When will I see the results?

It is usually possible to see results immediately after injections.

How long will I see results?

Depending on the area being treated, results may last between 6 and 18 months.
